This has been SW86 number 5 that Ive restored, so the Circuit design faults I had fixed previously in SW86 restoration number 1 , regarding the poor AGC design, the lack of AGC on the RF front end ,the poor ratio between the Diode load and Volume potentiometer which enabled the coupling cap C35 to charge up causing Audio distortion. This probably wasnt a problem in 1930's , but now with Audio compression and Transmitters being driven to 100% modulation, the Cap doesnt get a chance to discharge. I also removed the AGC from the 6C6 mixer and fixed the gain, this is a sharp cutoff tube anyway. The other "out of spec" components were replaced, including unfortunatley the mains transformer, which had a short on the HV secondary. The cabinet was in great condition, so a polish with Simoniz car polish and it came up shining like new. The chrome, I had re-chromed, I cant believe the cost at doing that !(dont ask, i think I was crazy at the time) Anyway, its a lovely Radio.
This is a video of the radio operating, from my youtube channel if you're interested.

This is the reproduction Dial shown on a Brown SW86. I have the graphics for this in the form of a PDF. You print it out on a good printer, cut it out and get it laminated in the thickest Lamination possible.

Great job! I like the work you did on the chassis to get it de-rusted. Did you try flattening the dial scale? I've never had any real success doing it but I know that some have.
Cheers

Richard, I found that a single lamination was too thin, so I cut out the laminated dials and got them laminated a second time. This helped a lot.

Hi Richard , Im impressed by your story and work with your set.
I am the proud owner of a Black SW 86 , it is working but only just. Would you be interested in restoring it? I am a collector, sadly not a technical person. Any help or advice welcome. Many thanks
Kind regards Vincent
