Hi everyone,
Living here in Kaiapoi I have come to hear about a local chap who seems to have been a bit of a "local identity" - a chap by the name of R.F. Joyce. He seems to have been a keen amateur astronomer and indeed I believe the Christchurch Astronomical Society's observatory at West Melton is named after him.
However it is his radio work that intrigues me more.It appears he owned a WW2 radar set in the early 1950s and sent the results of his observations to the Carter Observatory at this time, results which, when coordinated by Dr Elizabeth Alexander and set against observations from the Piha Radar Station led to the identification of the "Norfolk Island Effect" if I have got my facts straight.
It appears though that he also built radios here in Kaiapoi around this time, sets of no great electrical sophistication but ready sellers.I have chatted with a local person who remembers him as a chap who "cut a bit of a dash" and was prominent in local affairs.I have also spoken with another person who told me his grandmother had such a radio.Apparently the brand name of his radios was "Joyrad". I'm interested to know if any other members have come across this brand and if they can throw any more light on what the history of this tiny player in NZ's overall radio history might be. Thanks everyone and cheers,
