There is a plate on the chassis with a serial number and “Type VL”. The cabinet design looks somewhat similar to the Ultimate 514. Has anyone come across one of these? Attachments:

Valve lineup appears to be 2A7, 58, 2A6, 2A5, and 80. The Valve Museum says the 58 and 80 were introduced in 1936, but the style of this radio, with its very simple tuning dial and no on/off switch, suggests earlier than this.

A sharp-eyed member of the family has spotted that it says ULTIMATE on each of the little escutcheons on the front! So is it a relative of the Ultimate 514?

Yep, its an Ultimate... although which model it is, I could not say. Is there anything stamped on the back of the chassis - thats where the chassis code was for many of the 33-35ish years. The model code on these is different to the chassis code, and it seems the model 514 may have spanned several years and several chassis models so this could well be one. If you look at the 5TC chassis in this Courier www.vintageradio.co.nz/model/courier/5tc its very similar in chassis layout and even the back panel of the chassis is very similar... so its possibly a good fit in terms of the service info but what the actual model is would require finding advertising information from that era with a photo in it... and I have been through all the stuff I can find from 33-35 and not seen that one that I can recall. Cheers, Steve

Thanks, Steve. Here are a couple of close-ups, of the tuning escutcheon and the chassis plate. Cheers, Lawrence -- Attachments:

Thanks Lawrence, so at least that identifies it as yet another 5-valve broadcast chassis from the c.1934 (that badge with the TYPE box seems to be found on 1934 chassis') era... I find it very frustrating they had so many of them! And I don't have any documentation for the VL chassis. If you take the chassis out could you possibly take a series of photos of the top and bottom so I can add that info into the mix of what we know about these sets? It would be interesting to see what differences there were between this and other chassis of that time.
Cheers, Steve

Will do. I might try searching for advertisements for Ultimate in that period. Any suggestions as to where I might find some?
Thanks, Lawrence —
