I am in the process of restoring this National BCU console and have started by stripping the old finish from the cabinet as was in poor condition and I need to find an piece of veneer to repair a small part that is missing as per the attached photo, does anyone know of where I would be able to source some veneer (I’m in Auckland) to match up with the veneer on the cabinet in order to complete the repair. Cheers, Jon

I struggled to find somewhere to buy veneer from in Christchurch and ended up buying a pack of eBay from the states... its got all kinds of timber veneers in it, but the biggest problem is the thickness as modern veneers seem to be thinner than the veneers on cabinets. I've managed to blend down with sanding, but I wonder if gluing some black paper or something similar on the back of the new veneer might be a solution. In short, sorry I can't help with local sourcing, but eBay sellers do have multi-packs like this one: www.ebay.com/i/153376935349 - unfortunately since Covid sunk its claws into the world the shipping costs on eBay have gone through the roof. One possible solution might be to find a local cabinetmaker and see if they can either sell you some or point you in the direction of a company that distributes it? I never got around to doing that, as I bought one of those packs. Worst case, I can pull the pack out and see if any of the sheets I have in it would be a match. Cheers, Steve

Some people have been known to collect old (even radio) cabinets to soak off the outer veneers for repairs such is this.

Thanks for the help, I found a company called top veneer in Aus. and the postage isn’t too bad so will go down that route probably but will keep asking around in the meantime. Cheers, Jon

www.plyman.co.nz/ They are out in Henderson, just off Lincoln road near the NZBC transmitters. I would phone them first, as although they show it on their website, sometimes they don't actually have any in stock !

Thanks Richard, I had been sent in their direction by a few people but they had very little in stock and too light in colour but I will call in again when passing, before I make an online order. Cheers, Jon

This looks like a Walnut veneer. I have a number of pieces of this. If you can send me a couple of close-up photos I'll see if I can effect a match.

Hi Philconut, I have emailed you some close up pics, but I have also ordered some walnut veneer from Australia so will see if I have a good match when they arrive. Cheers, Jon

Cheers, Jon Be interested to see how your order goes with the Australian company. I have been looking around for a decent supplier of veneer as well. I did have some correspondence with an eBay seller and they assure me their packing is first class, but I have yet to buy anything
from them.

The order went well, arrived quickly and was well packaged (rolled up in a large cardboard box).
The price including shipping was also cheaper than the eBay sites I had looked at also, unfortunately the veneer is a bit lighter than that of the radio cabinet so will have to darken somehow.
