I was grateful to Steve recently for help with data on the Thorn M4. The model appears to date from 1969, though the particular example I'm working on looks as if it was put together in 1975.
This raised a question in my mind, which someone here may be able to answer: what was the very last radio model made in New Zealand? Is it the M4, or were there later examples? I'm talking here about commercial models, made for the consumer market.
Thanks,
Lawrence --

I don't know what the last one was, but it was long after this. There were radios being made here into the 80's - John Stokes even refers (somewhere) to a Stewart (Christchurch) radiogram being made in the 80's using valves from memory...
It also depends what you refer to as a radio - there were HIFI stereo systems being built by Pye, Philips, DRECO (I think - certainly the Majestic name was being used) etc. Autocrat became Sanyo Autocrat - I'm not sure if they were making under license or importing the parts almost fully assembled and just clipping them together...

David Reid and La Wood were both still making AM mantle radios well in to the mid 1970's. I worked as a radio & TV Technician for a retailer who sold these sets along with the likes of the Thorn M4 and others - even the Bell Colt solid state sets.

I think I would simplify things by looking for the last radio that is just a radio, ie., no added tape deck, etc. Must be possible to find it.

As a side issue I've often wondered when the last NZ made VALVE radio was made - commercially that is. Does anybody know for sure?

I believe that was Stewart in Christchurch. I don't know which one, but popular lore tells of a valve radiogram they made and sold in the 80's.
