Ha. Someone was silly enough to pay $175 for the GZ34. Can't believe it! Believe it - seems like it's fruitcake city on trade me at the moment with electronics prices being all over the show - I won a nice Simpson 265 m/meter recently BUT it did cost (had to bid $75). However an Avo 8 mk 6 went for $32 (I forgot and missed my chance there). There's a Heathkit transistor tester on the site for $100 start and that's not even the reserve - mine cost me $15 a year or so back AND I think I got something else with it - it's only the simple dc static variety. There's also a nice old Avo 16 for 'gulp' $460's starter!! Mine again was $30 several years ago. Yet recently I also scored a Heathkit Grid dip meter for $25.00 - missing the coils it is true, BUT I've seen them go for $50 in that condition. So things seem all over the show - just thank the Lord I mostly finished collecting a few years back - although I would have liked the Avo 8 mk 6 to round out my Avo collection. However some valves and valve testers remain at obscene prices due to the perceived 'old is good' syndrome - people rave on about the old long plate Phillips EL84's and the 'warm British sound' happily ignoring things like a) the Marshall stuff started as a copy of the Fender designs when you could not import US amps easily into the UK back in the 60's b) The UK Vox sound (as used by early beatles) was based on the EL34 which was the common TV audio output valve at the time. While there has been a slight bit of justification in that I understand Chinese KT66 valves happily exploded when subjected to the 600v + ht voltages in older amps, unlike the orignals that could take the stress, my feeling is those waffling on endlessly about the pure warm UK sound and class A amps have clearly never done any gigs in a pub, club or park. There I've found the punters are less interested in the guitar sound than the local female talent present and/or their next beer. Then of course there are older non tone-sucking 'bumblebee' capacitors which along with original long plate EL84's are now highly desired - again happily ignoring the fact that even with a genuine vintage 60's amp the electrolytic caps, valves, Output transformer, pots and other odds and sods in the tone pathway will likely have been replaced at some point in time. So most will be as original as Trigger's broom from Only Fools and Horses TV series ('this old broom's had four handles and eight heads over it's long life'). In their quest for tone, the subtle question of why their playing is so boring can be ignored and a hierarchy of original 'vintage' bits worshipped - suggesting they practice a bit more and develop their playing skills will simply be met with wails of 'but I need orange drop spragues to replace the tone-sucking caps in my Les Paul. So this, gentle reader, is why you is now, and will be, paying the earth for bog standard old valves and their testers on occasion!! Not so sure about the other price aberrations - full moon perhaps??

Sold at $4010.00 !!! I remember several customers with these combo sets of various makes. Replaced the TV with a 22" colour in several. Biggest you could just sit in the space. Didn't like delivering the big sets. Glad when they went out of fashion. May have been the only one left in NZ? David

Some of them even had tape decks in them as well - and, if I remember correctly, they were 3 motor Collaro tape decks too - and that made the 'units' extremely heavy.

Has anyone noticed the prices being bid for some Heathkit stuff on trade me recently?? Today a capacitor checker with magic eye went for $151 while a laboratory sig gen went for $75. Last week a couple of Heathkit VTVM went for up to $120. I had thought it was just one new bidder in Chch maybe starting a collection but he was outbid in the sig gen, and the two who were after the capacitor checker were new names I did not know. Interesting - if anybody can throw any light. My wife will be happy at any rate as I've been collecting Heathkit stuff for years along with Avo test gear and she's already been salivating at the thought of the cash she can get for the Avo gear alone when I'm gone. Good thing I'm the cook or the food might start tasting a little peculiar!!! cap testers go for $NZ500 & more I blame the likes of Mr Carlson & Jeff Trantor. & Franlab!

I loved the answer to his last question on that auction... but it just might be my grubby mind... the wife couldn't work out why I was laughing so loud.

This Auction had good media coverage, the radio didn't have its original knobs and it wasn't even a shutter dial ! Ive never seen so many people (488) watching an Auction for vintage radios on trademe before.

If only the jerks listing those sets had taken the time to answer the questions on the auctions - I guess they only cared about the cars...
