Well, it looks like we've got another week at least... so whatcha' doin'? I've been doing some work with students remotely, some research (including uncovering a bombshell revelation about Radio Corporation of New Zealand), and one repair video, with part 2 uploading now: youtu.be/qQKtnPEokzU

So far its been a 5B5 Bell colt in white with the green white and gold dial. A Halicrafters S38-C, just started on a Marconi CR 100 and figuring out why my mates Halicrafters S20-R wouldn't work between digging stumps out...
The S20 was interesting, looks like it was a restoration gone wrong and the AVC circuit was missing a meg ohm resistor and the AF pot was connected to the wrong tube... It now works but needs new toggle switches and a new air core transformer for the filter between the RF amp and converter tube. Somehow it was burnt to a crisp.

I've started on a very sad RCA/HMV R4 Superette. The attractive cathedral style cabinet is in reasonable condition but the chassis is quite the opposite. It's interesting to see how the designers flexed their muscles. This set has all the condensers in a single, large can, the driver & output transformers in another and all the resistors on a large tag board. It makes for a lot of wires! The power transformer wires are rubber covered and that has all perished. The frustrating thing is that each winding has been terminated then the next winding put on over the top, so that will present some difficulties. I found a name and date of 27/4/33 written on the paper wrap under the top cover. Not sure about the speaker. The cone is made from very stiff paper which has distorted badly over the years. This job will last much longer than lockdown! Onwards.

no time for a hobby here, I'm working on my house, I knew eventually there was going to be another lockdown, so stocked up on what I needed in time, it just happened a little sooner than I expected...

I'm currently working on a C.R.C (cash radio co). Not the best made radio by a long way, I could have made a better job of making the chassis in my vice at home! Trying to get my head round the circit as the volume doesn't turn fully down among other issues (it has been got at previously)

Spending a little time evaluating & tidying a 1936 U.K. Murphy A30C... at least the 10" speaker (with massive field coil mounted on it's back) shows good voice and field coils. Attachments:

Testing a guitar amp i built on a RCA 5T5 radio chassis. It sounds cool - take note, Mr. Clapton!

Well it's radio, but not vintage. I am rebuilding a 900 MHz broadcast link transmitter.

I bought a new toy and have been messing up the driveway. I call him Dug - although someone suggested it looked like a repurposed phone box, so maybe Tardis (actually, it needs a lot of work and has a lot of faults, so perhaps Turdis?) Not a radio - but I'm going to fit a radio to it

My shed radio, an Ultimate valve 60's one, stopped working - so I took it apart, resoldered all the broken connections, cleaned it all up, reassembled it and - it still does not work - sigh!

Check the continuity of the output transformer primary. A tell-tale sign of an open circuit primary is the screen grid of the output tube glowing red hot.

Well, I plugged my R4 in this morning and remarkably, it leapt into life! I then spent some time tracking down a dry joint on the oscillator coil. It aligned satisfactorily and seems to perform quite well despite a completely untuned 2nd IF transformer. Now onto the cabinet. The original speaker with the very stiff cone seems okay but I will reserve final judgement till it is back in the cabinet. It even has a new dial scale which took hours to draw!
Why can't I get these photos oriented correctly? It doesn't seem to matter which way I flip them beforehand they always come out upside down.

Ah it’s annoying isn’t it?, I believe it’s something in the image metadata that causes this. I often have photos that show the correct way on my PC and then show upside down when I upload them to sites, incl. Facebook. Generally I have to view the file in windows explorer and rotate it when viewing properties. If I rotate the image in my photo editor it doesn’t seem to fix the issue. Then of course the issue is compounded by either the web browser or site thinking you are uploading the same image after you correct it and I suspect it uses cached data and shows it in the wrong orientation.
