This piece of gear on the bench is a Heathkit Resistor substitution box RS-1.
I’ve always wanted one of these & I’d actually used it twice before I restored it. There were two problems – one major & the “usual”. First to the major one – at least half of the switch positions were open. Manipulation of the selector knob fixed this, but it wasn’t ideal. So, I tried something I’d used once before… I de-soldered both selector switches & immersed them in a bath of white vinegar with a small amount of baking soda. I left them to soak for around three hours, rinsed thoroughly in water & put in the sun to dry. After that I gave them a blast of CRC-56. All positions now select rock solid. As I’d done a lot of de-soldering I checked the values of all the resistors. I was surprised to find several were out of tolerance (all gone high). In the past I’ve found this type of resistor (Alan Bradley) to be quite stable. Mr. Carlson of Mr. Carlson’s Lab fame says similar thinks in his videos. As they all had silver bands – 20% & 1-watt replacements from Jaycar I decided to replace all.
I now have a very nice & stable unit which will be made welcome in my workshop.
It’s a nice partner to the Capacitance substitution box. There’s a separate post detailing the restoration of this one.
Best… John:)

Brilliant - so what happened with the AV-2 - did you get it sorted or is it in the 'roundtoit' pile??

Round Tuit & (slightly) too hard file! Need to get to Jaycar & get some 1N4148's or 1N30's. The original Crystal dioes are a bit leaky!
