Another radio turned up yesterday - 'working' of course. Well technically yes but the fact that it buzzed like crazy/only got one station indicated something wrong. So delving into it's guts I reconnected the earth side of the ferrite rod arial winding that had been broken off and put the rod back into its rubber clips which it had come out of, presumably as a jolt or being dropped. All now going well again.
Interestingly I connected the earth side of the arial winding to the second gang of the variable capacitor by accident on the first go and got a European station speaking what seemed to be Polish or a similar language fading in and out - most intriguing!!
As there was only one screw holding in the radio chassis in its case it appears soemone had a look inside but could not figure out what was amiss. Which led me to wonder when was the last time a used item I had bought turned up complete wtih all its screws, bolts, knobs etc. I cannot recall it - Avos usually have at least one and often more of the grub screws in the sides missing, radios their securing bolts and often knobs missing and while test gear with a front panel securred by metal screws or bolts invariably has at least one missing. Mains plugs can be present, cut off, or both.
Seems to be only in electronics this happens frequently - none of the used power tools I've bought has had screws or bolts missing, other vital bits absent etc. The nearest I've come to it was in the local Cash Convertors where bits would vanish off things the longer they were on the shelves - a favourite was those plug in stops on folding workmates.
Anyway I've always ratted small scrwews, bolts etc off any discards so usually cna find something to replace the nmissing bits but it makes me wonder - I mean you can understand the odd one rolling off the desk and vnaishing but 4 out of 6 bolts missing??? one favourite item for these gone are old analogue style asian make multimeters - quite often only 2 bolts where 4 or 6 once were. Weird.
