This came across my bench yesterday. A little brown 5M4 Clipper, probably the dirtiest radio yet, but basically sound. But wait - when it had been cleaned, it was no longer brown, but BLACK! This of course changes everything. Clippers came in many colours but black, as I understand it, was reserved for sets given to the directors of the company. Does anyone have any idea how many black Clippers are still around? Are they rarer than red Colts? I’m picking they are!

It looks brown in the photo. The brown ones are quite dark - are you sure it's black? The black ones are jet black - I have one, although it's broken - but it definitely looks very different to a brown one.
Re: numbers of black ones, then I've heard the same rumours you have, but I've been told by a couple of old timers that there seem to be plenty of them out there. Exact numbers? Who knows. I don't know how many people were on the board - but I'd guess around 10 tops... there are certainly more black clippers than that out there. I've seen more black Clippers than red Colts - which is only circumstantial - I don't generally go looking for either.
Still - if it is a black one then you have a nice rare radio.

I agree the photo makes it look a bit brown, but it is definitely black. I have a brown SW86 and the difference between them is very clear. Yes, a rare radio, and I wish it were mine! Still, when it is sold in the next few weeks the proceeds will go to a good cause. Cheers, Lawrence --

I seem to remember that 12 jet black cabinets were manufactured & presented as gifts to top management of the company which made these.
