There is also an AEW2 - Call me a crazy man, but I want that as well Does anyone know who made this? The knobs look like those used on some RCNZ sets like the model 14
and the dial pointer looks like a 'trimmed' (or just broken) version of that used in the Pacemaker 515 - the dial looks similar as well. So maybe Collier and Beale?
Both of those models are 1945ish, so the parts era is right... Of course the knobs could be replacements, but the dial and pointer are likely original.

Damn, well that looks almost exactly like a model 12... mostly.

Easier comparisons... it looks like some C&B parts, like possibly the IF cans and the valve shield... but all aspects of this set look very model 12ish... Good spotting Daniel!

This also reminded me about the NZ National Patriotic Fund Board radio I have in my collection - also made for troop canteens I'm told - this one is similar in construction to a Philco 710. www.vintageradio.co.nz/model/nz_national_patriotic_fund_board/np513"Within a month of war being declared, the government set up the National Patriotic Fund Board to co-ordinate efforts for welfare of those serving overseas and at home. A complimentary booklet, Comforts for the men in the Armed Forces, gave advice about what to send, and how to wrap goods, along with knitting patterns and recipes. The government provided some money, but provincial councils were also expected to raise funds. Local committees ran concerts and carnivals and, in a precursor to the telethon, radio got in on the act when 17 stations in the ZB network ran a telephone appeal that netted £75,000 (equivalent to more than $6 million in 2020)"
This led me to this photo from 1940: The right hand set looks Collier and Beale?
I should go do some work now

Surely that middle one is the Columbus model 14, in the Raeburn cabinet? Their 1947 miniature, which had 14A and 14R variants.

Do you mean the link to the Columbus model 14 page? I was just using that as a reference to the AEW2 having the same knobs...

And I did!
Interestingly this one is slightly different to the other two AEW2 models I've found. No broad arrow to be found anywhere, and a different tuning gang and dial, and most importantly: it has an ARTS&P label, which no self-respecting radio built on a military contract for army use would have ever had.

So the cabinet has been repainted at least twice in its life, and appears to have had a beige crackle finish originally. The dial is also not the same as the 'militarised' version. My best guess at this point is that it was sold of as army surplus after the conclusion of the war. Its also got a 230V power transformer, which the Army versions did not.
I have also read that these were made by Westonhouse (Westco) (and possibly others - the three I've seen now all have differences) for the US forces stationed here in NZ and each was individually inspected and broad-arrow stamped at the factory - I guess at the end of hostilities there were still some in the pipeline and they made their way to the same kinds of places that ZC1's popped up in.
So this one has a demilitarised dial, no serial number anywhere to be seen, but still all the hallmarks of a Columbus or Courtenay model 12, including what looks for all the world like a Radio Corp oscillator coil - but still with Collier & Beale-looking parts like the valve shields and IF cans.
I'll pull my 12A from its cabinet and take some side-by-side photos over the next few days and play 'spot the difference'
