Can anyone date this speaker, please? My best guess (and only a guess) is 1957, since it came with the Pacemaker Transportable from the same year.

That is odd. It certainly looks to be an identical box, but the whole thing appears to be professionally made, including the disc with the name on it. Maybe an inter-company deal? If the Philips was 1959, then perhaps this was the date of the speaker too. I wasn’t far out!

Actually it could have been a bulk purchase. Philips did sell those cabinets - I have a kitset 'build a radio' booklet based in that case... and I seem to recall a radio by a Rangiora radio shop in that cabinet as well... I'll see if I can find that, just out of interest.

Hi Steve, I have an incomplete set of plastic parts the same as this (front , several backs, small grilles ) and a dial printed on aluminium sheet seemingly part of a kitset radio.

Interesting - I'll see if I can find the kitset book, I wonder if they belong together?

Interesting - I'll see if I can find the kitset book, I wonder if they belong together? Here’s an image of the back. It has what appears to be a price label for £3 19s 6d, which if correct suggests it was just a speaker, not a complete radio. But the back also has a couple of interesting holes at the bottom, suggesting they were allowing for possible mains leads, perhaps. It would be nice if someone could find an ad for these extension speakers, from the late 1950s.

Thats a genuine Philips back, with Philips screws as well... so I can only imagine Philips imported too many of them. What an interesting use for one - I wonder how many people recognised them back in the day?

Hi David - while cleaning my office today I found the kitset book - is this the dial and case you have? If so, perhaps this book belongs in your shed rather than mine And Lawrence - the fact that this exists probably proves Philips had a surplus of these cabinets - so using one as an extension speaker makes sense... sort of. Cheers, Steve
