If you own a model 66, could you please tell me what the suffix is, and the serial number? What I (think I) know: 66 - 1941 66E - late 1941 66J - 1942 mid-1942 - late 1945 ---war production--- 66A - 1945 66W - 1946 66R - 1947 What I believed (although I don't recall why) is that the 66 ran until 1949, when the model 166 took over. There was a model 61 sold in late 1947, and all through 1948, which was part of the experimental series of sets - the models 44, 34 and 61 with their tuned chokes and oval PM speakers. I *thought* the 61 sat outside the normal line of dual-wave 6 valve sets, but on reviewing all the serial numbers of all the 66's I have pictures of I cannot find a single model 66 tag with a date code after 1947. So, now I am thinking that the 61 was a genuine replacement for the model 66 for about 2 years until the model 166 was introduced. I'd love to find (or not find) model 66 tags after 1947... Cheers, Steve

Good morning Steve
I am currently working on a Columbus 66J for a fellow member. The serial number for this set is: 22625, and it has a folded chassis, not a 'bath tub' one. I have a Courtenay 166R, serial number 06257 that belonged to our neighbour, given to them as a wedding present (the neighbours were instrumental in having my mum & dad meet as their bridesmaid & best man at their wedding), so this radio has huge sentimental value to me). At one point, I even owned the 'matching' Radio Corp. turntable that plugged in to this radio. Sadly, I no longer have it.

I do have them, thanks though. The schematics are often dated, but its a drawing date not a release date, and the original lab documents (of which I have a few) pre-date the official service info - so you can't use the dates on them as a definitive guide to a models year.

Sorry for the tardy reply - thanks David, I had only previously seen 66BC's in 1946 date codes, so they made them for longer than I thought - I have never ever seen a Columbus 66BC though.
Also, while away I found a 66T (1947 date coded) - so there are at least 7(!) variants of the 66... and it looks like 1947 was the last year... the 61 would have taken over in 1948, and then the 166 in 1949 for the foreseeable future.
The 61 was weirdly short-lived, along with the models 34 and 44 - cool sets, why didn't they take off?
