I'm trying to identify (circuit diagram?) the HMV set in attached pics. It spent most of it's days in Christchurch before being passed down and is currently in AK. It does appear to be N.Z. made but the E.M. speaker is Plessey "Made in England". Could it be by Collier & Beale? The only reference I can find is a pic in JWS's "More Golden Age" pg 109 which states 1938? and nothing else. It's a 5V+ set with 5Y3, 6V6, EBC33, EF39, ECH35, 6U5 eye. What appears to be a serial number (0098) is stamped into the right-rear top of the chassis... no other indications as to what it actually is (typically of early HMV). The set was given to me for assessment (repair) and has sentimental value to the owner. They're happy to make it a "display only" if it can't be fixed. First take tells me it may be a dog (or should that be "pig"?). Lots of dripping wax inside and nasty smells. Should I bother? Be interested in comment, Cheers,Bob

I don't know the history of this model, but it has a nice art deco cabinet and uses American valves, so Id repair it, if it were mine. I guess it depends on what your client wants to spend to get it working?

HMV model D5 - it only appears in advertising briefly in late 1939 (I only found 2 mentions), so was probably designed for the 1940 season but its an odd model that doesn't seem to fit with their lineup in that era at all. HMV NZ always seemed to me to be a bit all over the place so its hard to know who made it, or where (Aussie possibly?). The escutcheon reminds me of Aussie-made Philips sets like the 715P from the same time period - but also the Columbus Skipper. Philips and Columbus had worked together earlier on, but were both pretty separate by this stage so its probably coincidence they both used this escutcheon... but *MAYBE* Philips made it for HMV, or had a hand in it? WAIKATO INDEPENDENT, VOLUME XXXIX, ISSUE 3634, 18 NOVEMBER 1939Anyway, hopefully that gives some leads... Does the one you have still have its escutcheon? I do have photos of one with an escutcheon fitted: Cheers, Steve

Thanks Steve, good info there. Here's a pic showing escutcheon. The owner poly'd the cabinet and I swear they used a six-inch brush!. Never mind. Attachments:
