I'm repairing a Bell Colt for someone and am short a couple of valves. I need an EF89 and an EABC80 - not the usual EBC81 shown in several of the late model variants on this NZVRS website. The EABC80 is definitely factory fit and is not a modification. FWIW it looks to me as if this set has never had a repair apart from an output transformer and maybe some valves until now. Not bad!
Thanks

Interesting! Do you happen to have photos of the chassis and the dial? What serial number is it? I don't recall coming across that valve in one before. I can't immediately help with the valves - although I can probably find an EF89 I have no way of testing them currently - short of putting them in a radio and seeing if it goes.
Cheers, Steve

Hello johnr
I, also, would be really keen to see a close-up photo of the socket wiring of the EABC80 valve, as I have never seen a Bell Colt radio with one of these fitted to it either. Over the years, I reckon I would have serviced more than 1,000 Bell Colt radios. What you have there is very unusual. I can't help wondering whether EBC80/EBC81 valves were in short supply at the time of manufacture of that chassis, or a valve supplier made a real 'sharp deal' for Bell to buy a batch of EABC80's?

That's something of a unicorn you have there. I have never seen an EABC80 in a Bell Colt and it would be appreciated if you could post up some photos of the chassis, the tube line-up, the underside and the specifics of the wiring of the base for the EABC80. Bell had a reputation of making use of what was readily and cheaply available. It may be that they got a container-load of those tubes at a bargain basement price.
Aside from that, I have the two tubes you need - send me a PM with your address and contact details etc and I can get them away to you.

interesting, the EABC80 is a "triple diode triode" Bell must have got them cheap ? or couldn't get their normal supplies?

thanks everyone for all the replies and offer of help. Serial number is 81897. Photos of EABC80 socket attached, together with part schematic. Detector/1st audio circuit is same as a typical schematic from the NZVRS (eg 5B60 using EBC81) except for the update of the tone control circuit. Remainder of valve line-up is the usual - ECH81, EF89, EABC80, EL84, EZ80 John

Your circuit & under chassis photo seem to reinforce thoughts that Bell had a 'surplus' of EABC80 valves that 'needed' to be used. As you have already said, the under chassis view certainly seems to suggest that the chassis had the EABC80 fitted to it from the time of assembly.

Folks
a belated reply to close the thread: Radiotech provided the two valves I needed (thanks indeed!). The radio worked well and I was able to return it to its owner who was very pleased. It was a family heirloom.
