Some are aware of the road trip I took recently - it included 1657 photos of documents in Archives NZ over 3 long days. I am just now beginning to read through those documents in search of relevant info for the book - but the other odd gem is coming to light: There is a series of letters from various manufacturers listing how many sets they expected to make when peacetime production kicked back in, this was in response to a questionaire sent out by Ralph Slade towards the end of hostilities in WW2. The numbers didn't stack up very well. Interestingly, in the letters most companies said they would be using A.C. Jensen in Wellington for their cabinets - they must have been a very large manufacturer. A few Auckland based companies also suggested they would be using Refrigerators Ltd, amogst them was Radio (1936) Ltd. Did Refrigerators Ltd make the pressed steel cabinet we all know so well? Anyway, I found that letter to be interesting reading so thought I would share. For reference, Ralph Slade was the controller of production for the radio industry during WW2 - he was on loan from Philips where he was their chief(?) engineer. Bart Fortune from Radio Corp NZ was his 2IC. Cheers, Steve
